Close Coupled Toilets

Close coupled toilets tend to be the most popular style of toilet. Close coupled simply means that the cistern (the tank that holds the water) is joined to the pan (the base of the toilet) with no flush pipe visible between them. Many close coupled toilets are now also described as “back to wall”, referring to the ceramic at the base of the toilet meeting flush with the wall behind, offering a neat line and removing any small areas behind the toilet that require cleaning. This causes some confusion, as a back to wall toilet is technically a toilet where the cistern is hidden inside a wall or furniture. Should you wish to install a close coupled toilet that meets flush with the wall you should first look at the toilet you have at present. If the soil pipe (the waste pipe at the back of the toilet) goes straight out of the wall, then this new style of toilet may well be suitable for your bathroom. However, if your soil pipe exits the toilet and is turned through 90 degrees, in order to travel along the wall in either direction, you would not be able to fit a close coupled toilet with the ceramic flush to the wall. If you are in any doubt at all we would strongly recommend that you consult with your plumber before your purchase your new toilet.
